The Wear and Tear of New Runners

This past weekend I had hurt my ankle running. I have no idea what I did, but I think it was a mild sprain. I was foolish to run on it last weekend, but I did. Needless to say I took some time off. I rested on Tuesday to Thursday. It felt a lot better on Thursday, but I decided to take off one more day.

29 January 2010
Miles Ran: 4.0 Miles / 37 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 54.7 Miles

Day No. 20: After three days of resting my ankle, I am back on the streets running. I am taking it a bit slower, but I did not want to run any less. It felt good to be running again.

30 January 2010
Miles Ran: 4.0 Miles / 37 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 58.7 Miles

Day No. 21: Four more miles down.

31 January 2010
Miles Ran: 4.0 Miles / 37 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 62.7 Miles

Day No. 22: My god it was cold today. It has been in the high sixties for about two weeks, and BAM - it is back in the forties. I threw on my cold weather running gear and hit the road. I think I am getting a little bored with my current route, and think it is time to start mixing it up. I am going to start planning some new running routes for the month of February.

Pushing 50 Miles

23 January 2010
Miles Ran: 4.0 Miles / 35 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 44.2 Miles

Day No. 17: Today I pushed it up a notch. I started a new 4 mile run today which was a great run, but I was concerned how far I was from my house. I guess I will have to get use to being far from home as the milage increases.

24 January 2010
Miles Ran: 4.0 Miles / 36 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 48.2 Miles

Day No. 18: It was a stormy day. I managed to squeeze in my run between the ran. The run was good, but I was being blown around the streets as I continued. When I made it home and took off my running shoes, my ankle hurt. I was concerned, so I rested it for the rest of the day. I have no idea what I did to it, but it hurt. While I was resting, I stumbled onto a new website www.runningahead.com, which provided me a perfect log of all my runs.

25 January 2010
Miles Ran: 2.5 Miles / 21 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 50.7 Miles

Day No. 19: Today marks my 50th mile I have run. It is a first of many milestones to come. My ankle still hurt a little, but I chose to run through it. Dumb idea! I decided to take it easy and run at a nearby track. I figured it was a flat and easy run. About halfway through the run my ankle began to hurt more. Needless to say, that was that. I will be resting tomorrow and see how it feels on Wednesday.

Expedition Everest Challenge

I was exploring the Wide World of Sports website, and I noticed that Disney is bringing back the Expedition Everest Challenge. This challenge consists of a 5K run, and obstacle course, and a scavenger hunt. The highlight of this challenge is that you must work in pairs. I have talked with Jules (our school's P.E. coach) and she said that she would partner up with me. This awesome event begins June 12, 2010 at 10:00 p.m.

Return to the Run

This has been a week. I have been in Orlando last Wednesday to Friday at an educational technology conference. It was all fun and games, but there was no time for running. My highlight of the trip was going to the Nike Outlet store and picking up some new running clothes, including my much needed running gloves. Come Friday, I was so sick. Even though I got home, I was in no shape to run. Needless to say, I have some running to catch up on.

18 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 33 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 30.9 Miles

Day No. 13: I am finally back on the streets. It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and I completely believe that holidays are the perfect time for running. The weather was great, and there was very little traffic to deal with. I did my 5K run, but I had a horrible completion time. It took me 33 minutes to complete this loop. Ridiculous! I blame being sick and not running for a week. I know that I will be back on track by the end of the week.

19 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 29 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 34.0 Miles

Day No. 14: This week I decided to rotate my 5K run. I am running my regular loop backwards. Instead of my three uphills mid-run, I faced a long stretched out hill within the first third of a mile, and a second horribly steep hill on my last mile. I felt that this run was a bit easier then running it the normal way. The hills being spaced out made it much simpler.

20 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 28 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 37.1 Miles

Day No. 15: Just another day, just another run. I ran my regular 5K run in the original direction. Today marks the one month countdown to the FLASK 12K run. This run will be my first official race I will compete in. I know 7.5 miles is a bit much, but I never like to do anything easy. I at least need to run 4 miles by the end of this week.

Flash 12K
February 20, 2010
Woodville, Florida

21 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 28 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 40.2 Miles

Day No. 16: Ran the 5K run backwards once again. Tomorrow will be my day off, and I think I will start a new 4-mile loop on Saturday.

Running through conference week...

11 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 28 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 24.7 Miles

Day No. 11: It is still cold and I am still running. My ankle was a little sore today, but it felt better by the time I began running. Here's to the first injury...

13 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 28 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 27.8 Miles

Day No. 12: It's 7:00 a.m. and 22 degrees (in Florida mind you) and I just ran a 5K run. I am off to an educational technology conference in Orlando for the long weekend. I am not too sure if I will get a chance to run while I am down there. These conventions can last all day (plus I have no idea where to run while I am down there). The plus side is that it is suppose to be in the fifties when I am down there. Anyway, here is to the last of the frosty days.

The 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon....2011 Here I Come

This weekend was the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. I was excited to see how people placed in the run. At least I will be running it in one year. The weekend includes a Marathon Expo at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The next big event takes place on Saturday. It is the 13.1-Mile 1/2 a Marathon that runs from EPCOT to the Magic Kingdom and then back. The main event takes place early Sunday morning. The 26.2-Mile Full Marathon starts at EPCOT and runs to the Magic Kingdom. From there you run to Animal Kingdom, and followed by Disney Hollywood Studios. The marathon concludes back at EPCOT.

07 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.0 Miles / 27 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 15.4 Miles

Day No. 8: Time to run in the cold once again. I was hoping it would stay warm, but no such luck. So to welcome back the cold weather, I decided to run 3.0 miles. I will also take tomorrow off from running to give my muscles a break.

09 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 30 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 18.5 Miles

Day No. 9: This was my first 5K run. I realized that it was only a little more then what I was previously running, so it was not really a problem. It was another day in the thirties, but I am starting to enjoy running in the cold weather.

10 January 2010
Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles / 28 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 21.6 Miles

Day No. 10: I ran another 5K today. It was all good until I tripped on the curb. My ankle was a little sore. The pain eventually went away. It did make me think of all the stupid ways I could hurt myself, and I thought running was a safe sport.

Today concluded the Disney Marathon Weekend. I am excited, and know that this year will fly by. 364 Days until the 2011 Marathon!

Running the 2.1-Mile Loop

03 January 2010
Miles Ran: 2.1 Miles / 19 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 6.1 Miles

Day No. 4: Today I began the 2.1 mile loop. The first mile was nice and easy to run. It was when I began the second mile that I began to have difficulties. Mile no. 2 begins with an up-hill climb. It is a short hill, but I am not use to hills yet. I began to get apprehensive if I could finish. I knew it was in my head, and I continued to finished. The incredible part about today was how cold it really was. This was the coldest day by far. The temperature was 29 degrees. This is Florida, so why is it 29 degrees. I was comfortable, but really wished I had gloves for my hands. They hurt quite a bit.

04 January 2010
Miles Ran: 2.1 Miles / 20 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 8.2 Miles

Day No. 5: Today I repeated the 2.1 mile loop, which I will continue to run throughout the week. Today, the temperature was 32 degrees, which was only that warm because I choose to wait until it was later in the day. I decided I needed a pair of sports headphones, so I went to Best Buy today and bought some. They were $40 dollars, but they will be worth every penny. Now I can run without the headphones continuously falling out of my ears.

05 January 2010
Miles Ran: 2.1 Miles / 18 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 10.3 Miles

Day No. 6: Today was the third say on the 2.1-mile loop. I was excited that I completed the loop in 18 minutes. That means that I ran about 9 minutes per mile. I hope I can maintain that pace or do better then that pace. My biggest concern about running in a marathon or race is that I will be slower then everyone else. No one ever wants to be the last person to finish. Right now I will focus on enjoying the run and less on the time.

06 January 2010
Miles Ran: 2.1 Miles / 18 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 12.4 Miles

Day No. 7: It is a wonderful 45 degrees, the warmest day it has been in a while. It's amazing that I would consider that today was a warm day. I ran the 2.1 loop once again. I maintained the same pace as yesterday which was awesome. I think that tomorrow will be time to increase my distance.

The Project Begins

The Project...
The Run Disney Project consists of running the Walt Disney World Wine & Dine 13.2 Mile - 1/2 Marathon in October 2010 and the Walt Disney World 26.2 Mile Marathon in January 2011.

Who Am I...
Hello...My name is Joe Miller and I currently live in Tallahassee, Florida. I was never really a runner, and in fact would absolutely dread the thought of running. Something changed this year. I don't know if it was turning thirty or if it was the start of a new decade, but I wanted to do something with my life. I came across an article about the upcoming 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon this January 09-10, 2009, and thought to myself..."I want to do this." I have always loved everything Disney. I am kind of a fanatic in that way. So I told myself, I will run the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon. This will give me a little over a year to train, run, and compete in other competitions. While I was researching the Walt Disney World Marathon, I found that Disney was starting a new 1/2 marathon. The Wine & Dine 1/2 Marathon is a night time run, and I thought that would be a great practice for the main marathon.

By day I am a third grade teacher at Kate Sullivan Elementary School in Tallahassee. I love my job, even though it takes up almost all of my spare time, so it will be nice to do something non-school related. I am looking forward to the journey that the Run Disney Project will take me, so letting the running begin.

31 December 2009
Miles Ran: 1.2 Miles
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 1.2 Miles

Day No. 1: Today I ran for the first time since I can remember. It was a lot harder then I remember, but it was not so much the running, instead it was the breathing. I could not breath. Today's run consisted of a 1.2 mile run. I am not sure how long the run took, but I was back within 30 minutes. This also includes the 1/2 mile walk each way from my house to the beginning of the loop. There was only one small hill, and that is where I started to have problems breathing. I am not sure if my breathing was a result of the cool and rainy weather or just because I am not use to running. Either way, I am glad I started running.

01 January 2010
Miles Ran: 1.2 Miles
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 2.4 Miles

Day No. 2: Day number two was much easier then yesterday. It was a lot easier to breath, but today my legs began to hurt just a little bit. Today's run was the same 1.2 mile run that I ran yesterday, except it was raining. The first quarter of a mile was no problem. I was going at a faster pace, but slowed as I made the first hill. I still have a bit of fear in regards to running hills. I know that it is all in my head. I know it will get easier as I continue to run.

02 January 2010
Miles Ran: 1.6 Miles / 15 Minutes
Run Disney Project Total Miles: 4.0 Miles

Day No. 3: Today I felt that I needed to push myself a bit more, so I increased my run to 1.6 miles. It was horribly cold today, but I suited up in my warm-up pants, running jacket, long sleeve shirt, and winter cap. I was surprisingly warm. I began a new loop today that ran along main streets. I feel uncomfortable running on the main roads, but once I get to the back streets I am back into my comfort zone. Today's run consisted of more hills then the previous loop. I did want more hills in my run. The hills today were fairly easy. The only trouble I had was getting started in the first quarter-mile of the run, and after that it was smooth sailing.
